The so-called terms are words that are specially used in a certain field. The same words have different meanings as terms in different industries. We always talk about heat treatment, but do you understand the terms commonly used in the heat treatment industry? Today, Zhengzhou induction heating equipment manufacturer will tell you some terms commonly used in the heat treatment industry.
(1) Metal. It is a substance with opacity, metallic luster, good thermal and electrical conductivity, and its electrical conductivity decreases with the increase of temperature, and is rich in ductility and malleability. The atoms inside the metal are regularly arranged (i.e. crystal).
(2) Phase. Components of an alloy that have the same composition, structure, and properties.
(3)Alloy. A substance composed of two or more metals or metals and non-metals and having metallic properties.
(4) Normalizing. A heat treatment process that heats steel or steel parts to a temperature of 40~60°C or higher above the critical point Ac3 or Acm, holds it for a certain period of time to achieve complete austenitization, and then cools it in still air. The purpose of normalizing is mainly to improve the mechanical properties of low carbon steel, improve the machinability, refine the grains, eliminate structural defects, prepare the structure for subsequent heat treatment and obtain a pearlite-like structure.
(5)Quenching. It refers to heating the steel piece to a temperature above Ac3 or Ac1 (the lower critical point temperature of the steel), austenitizing the steel and then cooling it at an appropriate speed, so that martensite occurs in all or a certain range of the cross section of the workpiece. A heat treatment process that transforms unstable organizational structures such as martensite into martensite (or bainite). Common quenching processes include salt bath quenching, martensitic graded quenching, bainite isothermal quenching, surface quenching and partial quenching. The purpose of quenching is to obtain the required martensitic structure of the steel parts, improve the hardness, strength and wear resistance of the workpiece, and prepare the structure for subsequent heat treatment.
(6) Tempering. A heat treatment process in which the quenched workpiece is heated to an appropriate temperature below the critical point Ac1 for a certain period of time, and then cooled to room temperature using a method that meets the requirements to obtain the required structure and properties. Common tempering processes include low temperature tempering, medium temperature tempering, high temperature tempering and multiple tempering. The purpose of tempering: mainly to eliminate the stress generated by the steel parts during quenching, so that the steel parts have high hardness and wear resistance, as well as the required plasticity and toughness.
(7) Quenching and tempering treatment. It refers to the composite heat treatment process of quenching and high-temperature tempering of steel or steel parts. Quenching and tempering treatment is widely used in various important structural parts, especially those connecting rods, bolts, gears and shafts that work under alternating loads. After quenching and tempering treatment, the tempered sorbite structure is obtained, and its mechanical properties are better than those of the normalized sorbite structure with the same hardness. Its hardness depends on the high temperature tempering temperature and is related to the stability of the steel and the cross-sectional size of the workpiece, generally between 200 and 350HB. The steel used for processing is called quenched and tempered steel. It generally refers to medium carbon structural steel and medium carbon alloy structural steel.
(8) Annealing. A heat treatment process in which the hypoeutectoid steel workpiece is heated to 20-40°C above Ac3, kept warm for a period of time, then slowly cooled in the furnace (or buried in sand or cooled in lime) to below 500°C, and cooled in the air. Common annealing processes include recrystallization annealing, stress relief annealing, spheroidizing annealing and complete annealing.
(9) Brazing. A heat treatment process that uses brazing material to weld two workpieces together.
