Analysis of heat treatment process for cylindrical milling cutter heated by medium frequency induction heating machine

A milling cutter is a rotating tool with one or more teeth used for milling. During operation, each cutter tooth intermittently cuts off the remainder of the workpiece. Milling cutters are mainly used for machining planes, steps, grooves, forming surfaces and cutting off workpieces on milling machines. The working environment of milling cutters is quite harsh, so we have high requirements for the quality of milling cutters. Milling cutters are usually heat treated using medium frequency induction heating machines to meet their working needs. Today, the editor will briefly talk about the medium frequency induction heat treatment process of cylindrical milling cutters.

Cylindrical milling cutters are used for machining flat surfaces. Generally, one milling cutter is used alone, or several milling cutters can be combined together for wide plane milling. When combined, it must be left and right staggered helical teeth, and the end face parts of the milling cutter should be connected by end face keys. In addition, the radial circular runout of the peripheral edge of the entire combined milling cutter to the axis of the inner hole should have certain requirements according to processing needs.

The technical requirements for heat treatment of high-speed steel cylindrical milling cutters are as follows: the surface of the milling cutter should not have cracks, chipping and other macroscopic defects, the hardness is 64-66.5HRC, the tempering degree is ≤2 levels, and the overheating degree is ≤1 level. Raw materials should be reformed and forged, and the carbide segregation should be ≤3 grades. The heat treatment process is introduced as follows:

1) Preheat. Dry it in a pit furnace at about 400°C, and then preheat it at 850-870°C with a medium frequency induction heating machine. The preheating time is twice the heating time.

2) Heating. Different brands of high-speed steel have different heating temperatures. W18Cr4V, M2, and 9341 steels are heated by medium-frequency induction heating machines, and their heating temperatures are 1260-1280°C, 1215-1225°C, and 1220-1230°C, respectively.

3) Cool down. This type of milling cutter generally has a keyway. Do not rush into the coolant after it is released from the furnace at high temperature. It should be pre-cooled in the air for a few seconds and then put into neutral salt at 580-620°C for cooling. The cooling time is the same as the high-temperature heating time.

4) Tempering. Use 540-560℃xlhx3 times of conventional tempering process, if the 3 times of tempering are not satisfactory, add 1 time of tempering.

About the intermediate frequency heat treatment process of cylindrical milling cutters, I will briefly say these today, and I hope it will be helpful to your work. However, the editor hopes that everyone can share more heat treatment processes and learn from each other.
